Forty Fathoms is a band from Denver, Colorado. They got together in early 2010. Taylor MacNicholas (vocals), Kyle Kaliszewski (guitar), Ryan Hall (drums), and Evan Stiduhar (bass) created a sound that combined heavy, metal-core riffs memorable of Bring Me The Horizon and Haste The Day mixed with catchy melodies of A Day To Remember. They produced a cover of Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK” that received over 570,000 plays on Myspace. After recording their first songs, they started to play at Colorado venues, each time fans wanting more and more of Forty Fathoms.
Forty Fathoms released their debut self-titled EP in November of 2010. Shortly after releasing this EP, the band realized that in order to take it further they would need a second guitarist. They recruited Jeff Minor, a long-time musician and friend. In August of 2011 the band went to White Lake, Michigan to record with Joshua Wickman at Dreadcore Productions (Within The Ruins, Knights of the Abyss).
They released the sophomore EP entitled IN/FAMOUS released in January 2012. It is filled with heavy breakdowns, raging riffs and memorable choruses that keep you listening. They sold out their CD release show with 500+ fans showing up, as well as selling 200 physical copies of the record and 1000 singles online in a week.
Forty Fathoms sold out the Marquis Theatre on several occasions and played with numerous national acts including Silverstein, The Chariot, Oceano, Miss May I, and also won a battle of the bands to open up for the World War III Tour with Asking Alexandria, Hollywood Undead, We Came As Romans, and D.R.U.G.S. at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, CO.
Forty Fathoms fits under melodic hardcore because they have aspects of hardcore and have riffs with punky parts and pretty leads. They take the parts of bands like Haste The Day and Bring Me The Horizon and add the melodic catchier parts of choruses, like A Day To Remember or For The Fallen Dreams.

My favorite songs are Born To Lead because it has a little bit of everything; sick riffs, heavy breakdowns and  a really catchy chorus! “Looks like your surrounded, and don’t be looking that still, you should of known by now, (when its time to kill) we all end up here somehow.”
I really like the song Hopeless. “its time to move, so leave this place and the faces you know, its time to move, don’t turn your back, take it run, its all we know.” I love these lyrics. The singer is definitely singing/screaming about situations he experiences, but anyone can easily relate to these lyrics. The breakdowns are nasty and when the singer screams “you will see the truth, when the deed is done” it really reminds me of “All My Friends Are Wild” by Adestria<3.
I really enjoy listening to Eyes Up Here. “We all know that this is war, so we will sail away, while the weather turns, we hope for a better day.” Their lyrics are mostly about backstabbers and how not to mess with them or karma will come to collect. If you LOVE A Day To Remember, Adestria, Close Your Eyes, Endwell, or For The Fallen Dreams, you will LOVE Forty Fathoms. Guarantee.

Music fanatics

I guess it’s kind of early to be asking for people’s opinion, but I’ll ask anyway. Do you think as one gets older, they lose or gain or stay the same when it comes to liking music. Does one usually like music a lot during his or her teens or in his or her late 20’s? Do the majority of people like music the same throughout their life? What factors play a roll in having a strong interest in music? What do you think?

Agraceful

Which artist to start of this blog right…? Hmm… I think I’ve got it. I will post artists I review in no particular order.

Agraceful
Agraceful is and will always be one of my favorite artists hands down. They were a metalcore five piece band from Dayton, Ohio, formed in 2007-2010 and signed to Sumerian Records. Chris Roetter (vocalist in Agraceful) left in the beginning of 2010 to start a new project called Like Moths To Flames with ex-members of Terrafirma. Roetter was originally frontman for Emarosa, but after a falling out, Agraceful become his main focus and left Emarosa. In mid 2008, Kasey and Rick joined Agraceful after their band, Here I Come Falling (Rise Records), split up.
Their debut album, The Great I Am, was released on August 19th 2008. In late 2009, rumours of a breakup started after the band canceled a tour with In Fear and Faith and after vocalist Roetter announced his new side project Like Moths To Flames. Nate, their drummer, has recently left the band. Kasey Smith has also left the band who is now working on a solo project called Romance On A Rocketship.
One of the reasons that Roetter left Emarosa was so that he could pursue a project that had a more religious foundation. For people that dislike the Christian message, they’d be a turn-off. Agraceful is a breath of fresh air just listening to the lyrics. They are not trying to drill Christianity into your head, they are simply integrating it into your mind with strong, meaningful lyrics that provide solace in their beliefs.
The vocals of the album dominate all of the tracks. Whether Roetter is screaming, growling, or singing, he manages to impress his audience by mixing up the vocals so one get a taste of all his vocal techniques. The vocals and music might get heavier in parts but they do not have to rely on a breakdown to get their sound across. Roetter’s screams are really powerful and emotional and are definitely the better aspect of his vocals.
The instrumentation on the album is closer to the more melodic and atmospheric feel of Oceana. They do well to keep it away from the standard instrumentation of most screamo releases. They have also strayed away from the breakdown-breakdown formula that has come to be a staple in this genre. The Great I Am’s opening track, “A Prophecy: In Reverie” has melodic guitar solos and double bass grooves that truly represent metalcore and screamo. “Stygiophobia” is faster cut and has less musical structure and more destructive elements, which makes it the perfect song to bang your head and mosh to.The Things We Believe” shoots straight growls, heavy shredding and ear-tingling repetitive beats. “In Oceans” has screams mixed in with the harmomnic bellowings backed by a rhythmic blend of riffs and fills creating a nice visual. “Revelations” has tons of emotion and inner power from the lyrics to the music making it soulful in its presence. “Aermageddon, Pt. 3” is a heartfelt anthem that is great with its chugging, chunky bass licks, tongue-lashing vocals and dark chords. Agraceful ends The Great I Am with its sludgy and wrenching title track as it’s slow and progressive, leading towards emocore.
The guiatars for Agraceful have some similarities to the guitars on This Is Your Way Out – EP by Emarosa, but they are tuned lower. There are some very decent riffs on this album, some of the standout songs for me would be The Great I Am, Stygiophobia, The Messengers Are Winds, Pt. 1, In Oceans, and their first music video for the album The Great I Am, A Prophecy: In Reverie, which can be seen here.
Lyrics that stand out on this album:
Something here is keeping me quiet again,
all of this feels so familiar to me,
all of this feels so far away
but these are the things that are holding us back from the world
-Armageddon, Pt. 3
No lies I swear I’ve been here for days
with no concersations to choke the things that we never could say
and that’s the problem tonight
You’re not here inside
You’re not here with me
-The Servants Are Tongues Of Fire, Pt. 2
You’re closing your eyes just to feel your heart inside your chest
You’re closing your eyes just to stay alive.
-Stygiophobia
I know you’ll regret all the things that you left behind
Now you lose the world that you had grown to love
-A Prophecy: In Reverie

If you think you’d enjoy a more mature and interesting version of the old Emarosa, then Agraceful is what you are looking for. At first I was angry and baffled that Roetter would do such a thing and leave Emarosa, but this is what great artists do. They take part in multiple projects, some might dwindle, and some might be created to thrive. Roetter was and is part of many projects. I will get to those in later posts.

While Agraceful was still in tact, they managed to produce amazing music.
